Introduction to Pathfinder Adventure card game 2nd Edition

Have you ever wanted to experience a condensed card game version of dungeons and dragons? Well now you can with the recently released second edition of the Pathfinder adventure card game. The base game comes with 8 classes to choose from as well as a short introductory campaign. Round up your rag-tag team of adventures and begin your quest!

How to Play Pathfinder Adventure card game 2nd Edition

Pathfinder is somewhat of a legacy style game where you progress the story and upgrade your characters as you play. In the first session each player choses a character to play for the duration of the campaign. Each character has a number of unique abilities and bonuses that are used throughout the game.

The play area is set up by grabbing out the appropriate location cards and randomly allocating the items/allies/monsters/blessings/etc that are listed on those location cards. For most games, each deck also is given a minion or villain cards which get shuffled along with the other cards in the location decks. Once the locations are all sorted, players chose which location they wish their characters to start at.

The goal of each game is (usually) to find and defeat the villain. The only way to do so is to close (or temporarily close) all the locations except for the one where the villain is located to force a confrontation. If any other location remains open, the villain is randomly put into one of the other open locations.

On a players turn, they can either move to a new location, use a pre turn action (some location cards will list these, eg the tower), or they can chose to immediately explore that location. A player will draw the top card of the deck and resolve the card. If the card if an ally for example, that player must succeed on the check listed on the card to acquire the ally. Barriers and Monsters typically have harder checks that players must attempt in order to defeat them. After they have resolved this first card, they can chose to explore again if a card in their hand allows them to do so. Players need to try and manage their time and decks as they only have a limited amount of turns to complete each game scenario.

When a scenario is won, the story progresses and the characters will all get to upgrade one of their abilities.

Notes on Pathfinder Adventure card game 2nd Edition

The base game of Pathfinder acts more as a foundation for future adventures which are sold separately. The introductory adventure takes around 15-20 hours to complete. The game expansions which come out every year are projected to add a good 40-60 hours of game play per addition. While these may seem like somewhat of a money sink, it’s actually really good value for money/hour of gameplay compared to some other big priced games. In terms of game complexity I’ll admit it’s more suited for hardcore gamers, however with a little patience and practice even a more casual gamer would be able to enjoy this game. I highly recommend this to any players who like role playing games like Gloomhaven or table top games like Dungeons and Dragons.

Best Board Games to play while in Quarantine

Best Board Games to play while in Quarantine

With many of us being told to stay at home during this global pandemic I thought it would be a nice time to create a list of board games that are sure to keep you occupied while we wait for the time when we can all go back to work. This list has a variety of games suited from families to keep the kiddies busy to young couples looking for something else to do other than Netflix and chill. So without further ado, here is my list of best board games to play while in Quarantine.

1 Pandemic

Pandemic Review

A little on the nose yes, but what better way to pass the time than to play a board game literally about fighting a pandemic? The cooperative nature of this game makes it great to play as a couple or as a family. This is also one of those rare games that you can also change the difficulty of depending on who you are playing with. This flexibility makes it a great chose to play with both kids and hard core gamers alike. This Quarantine, fight the pandemic and save humanity from the comfort of your own home!

2. Gloomhaven

gloomhaven review

This game is definitely more for the serious gamers out there. But if you are even remotely interested in dungeons and dragons and more fantasy inspired board games I cannot highly recommend this game enough. It is essentially like playing a full campaign in D&D with no Dungeon Master. This coupled with the literal hundreds of hours of content this game has to offer means that you will be set for entertainment as far as board games go in quarantine. Even though it can be a single player game I definitely recommend playing with at least one extra person to bounce battle strategies off and to talk about decisions you must make during the campaign. It certainly comes with a hefty price tag but in my opinion it has been one of the best value for money games I have ever purchased.

Time: 45-60 min per session

Cost: Very High

3. Clue (Cluedo)

clue review

For my third pick I chose to go with a classic. Clue is a great family board game that I have literally played for hours on end with my own parents back when I was younger. I has great replayability and I have always felt that kids and adults are somewhat on a level playing field which is great for family games. I know that some families will prefer Monopoly and that’s okay too, but for me, Clue has always been my favorite of the classic board games (especially because the games don’t take 5 hours and I don’t want to kill my sister when she takes the last red property I needed!).

4. Castle Panic

castle panic review

Castle panic is another great cooperative game with high replay value to play during quarantine. You and your friends must work together to defend your castle against hordes of ogres and goblins. It’s fairly simple mechanics wise but without good cooperation the game is very hard to win. This is the perfect game for siblings to play as it forces them to work together instead of against each other like so many other board games for those age brackets. Even as an adult I still find a lot of joy in playing a game or two with my partner, especially since it’s not a good idea to get into a fight over a board game when we can’t escape each other.

5. Ticket to Ride

ticket to ride review

For my last pick on this list I have to go with ticket to Ride. My partner and I love this game series so much mostly due to its vintage art style and chill game mechanics. It’s what we always fall back on when we can’t decide what game to play. It’s great for both kids and adults alike (especially for any train lovers out there like me). If you are looking at which one to start off with I would recommend getting the Europe map as it feel that has one of the best maps of the series and the inclusions of stations make it a little less stressful for those trying to complete routes.

And that is my list for board games to play while in quarantine. I hope you found this list helpful to your board game needs. On the other hand if you are looking for some good two player games to play with your partner I would recommend checking out my list for top 10 best board games for couples.

Reinhard Staupe Sherlock Card Game Review

Introduction to Reinhard Staupe’s Sherlock Card Game

Reinhard Staupe’s Sherlock Card Game is a great game to help improve reading, object identification, and memory in young children. It’s a great memory game for young players as the rules are fairly simple and the game play is still challenging enough to keep them invested. The idea of the game is that you are Sherlock and you are following the clues around the board.

How to Play Reinhard Staupe’s Sherlock Card Game

Reinhard Staupe Sherlock Card Game
Visual of Game Play

To set up Sherlock the card game you must shuffle the cards and place them in a stack in the middle of the playing area. Then you place 8 cards face up in a circle around the stack. Players take some time to memorize these 8 cards and when they are ready they flip the cards back over so they are face down.

The first player takes the Sherlock token and places it on one of the face down cards and announces what they believe that card is. That player then flips that card face up to reveal if they were correct or incorrect. Should they be correct, they then move in the direction that the card instructs them two (with an arrow pointing in a direction left or right and a number dictating how many cards). They move to this new card and must again guess what that card is and if they are correct they move on to the next card and so on until they land on a card that is face up which they then take as their point. That card is then replaced by a new card from the deck which is revealed to all players before being also placed face down in the empty space. Should a Player guess a card wrong at any time they lose their turn and the next player becomes Sherlock and tries to remember their way around the cards.

The player who is the first to gather 6 clue cards is the winner!

Notes on Reinhard Staupe’s Sherlock Card Game

This Sherlock card game is a great gift idea for kids around the ages of 5 or 6. The game play is simple enough to understand and start playing within minutes which is great for younger kids with shorter attention spans. The more they play the better kids will become at memorizing cards which can flow into other aspects of the education. This is a great simple game which has always been a favorite of mine when playing with younger kids.

Number of Players: 2-4

Age: 8+

Introduction to Takenoko

Takenoko is a great game to play with kids and adults alike with its colorful art style and fun game mechanics. The story for the game of Takenoko is that the Japanese emperor was gifted a Panda by the emperor of China. The gardener is trying to maintain and grow the garden with plots and irrigation so that bamboo will grow to feed the hungry Panda. There is plenty of strategy to keep the more hardcore gamers happy and the rules are easy enough to understand that any child over the age of 8 should be able to pick this game up and play in no time.

How to Play Takenoko

To start the panda and gardener are on the positioned on the starting pond tile. On each of the player’s turns they roll the dice and take two actions plus whatever bonus action that get from the dice. Players can chose to either; take an objective card from the objective decks, place a plot tile, pick up an irrigation stick (which can be placed later for free), Move the gardener to grow the bamboo, or move the Panda to eat the Bamboo.

The players take actions based off their objective cards as the first to finish 7 objective cards wins bonus points with the emperor’s favor and at the end of that round the player with the most points is the winner. You complete objective cards on your turn only so as soon as your turn starts and one of your cards is competed you can place that card face down in front of you on the table. If there completed on other players turns but then suddenly disrupted before getting back to you, you must then re-create the completion condition on your objective cad before placing it down.

Notes on Takenoko

Takenoko is a surprisingly strategic game. There are multiple strategies you can try to use to win the game, each as valid as each other. Depending on events around you there may be a need to adapt these strategies as well which keeps the game play always fresh. Takenoko is also a great game for couples as it plays just a well with 2 players as it does with 4. So for any birthday board game, Valentine ’s Day board game or just one to play with the family, I highly recommend getting Takenoko.

Best Board Games for 10 year old Girls

10 year old girls are absolute spoiled for choice when it comes to board games. They can play both kids games and adult games and are able to read and interpret the rules more easily than younger kids. For this reason the list for 10 year old girls is larger hold a more diverse list of games to play. Girls who like more of a challenge I highly recommend trying Ticket to ride or Settlers of Catan. For those who want to play a more casual game I would go for exploding kittens or love letter.

Takenoko is a fun Japanese inspired game where players are trying to be the first to complete 7 objective cards. Takenoko is a great game for 10 year old girls as the game play is intuitive and great for building upon strategy skills and resource management, all with a really fun art style. Despite its admittedly more ‘feminine’ appearance Takenoko is actually a personal favorite of mine as the art style reminds me of stylized anime from the 2000s. I highly recommend this game for girls and adult men alike.

8 Year olds are the perfect age to start playing the games that most adults play. This list sticks to the main classic board games that I feel most kids should play at least once since they are very likely to play them more often as they get older.

Time: 30-60 minutes

Pricing: High

Ticket to Ride is a great euro-style board game where the objective is to finish as many destination tickets as you can before you or someone else runs out of trains. This is a great game for the whole family to play as its more mature art style and rules make it just as fun for adults to play with the older kids. This game is great for 10 year old boys who love board games especially as it requires more strategic thinking from its players than other games on this list.

Jungle Speed

jungle speed review

Number of Players: 2-10

Time: 15 minutes

Pricing: Medium

Jungle speed is a speed based party game where the aim of the game is to swipe the totem when your card matches an opponent’s. Jungle Speed is a great party game as its easy rules make it easy to learn and play. The real challenge comes from being able to spot the matching symbol before your opponent which can be hard to do especially with larger player counts. Definitely a great present idea for a 10 year old who likes speed based games.
